Reddit is 3% of AI citations, and every one is a single thread

The engines don't read Reddit. They read one thread that matches one question, and they rarely agree on which.

Reddit ranked third in Google AI Overviews and carried 2.9% of its citations

The usual advice for getting named by ChatGPT includes a line about Reddit: it's one of the most cited sources, so get your brand talked about there. The first half is true in our data. The second half doesn't follow from it.

Between 22 August and 29 September 2026 we collected 1,764 answers from two engines: Google AI Overviews and our ChatGPT engine, which queries OpenAI's API with web search available. Most of the questions came from one B2B software category, so treat this as one slice of the web.

  • Google AI Overviews: 573 of 851 answers cited sources, 4,803 citations in all. reddit.com had 141 of them (2.9%), tied for third behind youtube.com (489) and linkedin.com (169). At least one Reddit thread appeared in 123 of the 573 cited answers, about one in five.
  • ChatGPT engine: 175 of 913 answers cited sources, 1,230 citations. reddit.com had 42 (3.4%), the second most cited domain. A thread appeared in 28 of the 175, or 16%.

All 183 Reddit citations pointed at one thread each

Not one link went to a subreddit's front page, a user profile or a brand account. Every URL was a specific comment thread. There were 101 different threads across 64 subreddits. 67 of them were cited once and never again in the five weeks. Just two threads were cited by both engines.

So neither engine is reading Reddit as a whole. Each retrieves a thread that happens to match the question in front of it, and the two engines picked almost entirely different threads for the same category. Most of the threads we saw sat in professional subreddits where people who do the job compare tools.

That makes the thread the unit you can do something about. Posting widely across Reddit is a bet that your post turns into one of those threads. Finding the threads already being cited for your questions is not a bet.

Google and OpenAI both pay for Reddit's data, and neither says how it's weighted

On 22 February 2024 Google announced access to Reddit's Data API, which it described as real-time, structured, unique content, to better understand Reddit content and to display, train on and otherwise use it. On 16 May 2024 Reddit and OpenAI announced that OpenAI would use the same Data API to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT, especially on recent topics.

That explains why a thread from last month can turn up in an answer. It doesn't tell you how much a thread counts against a review site or a vendor's own page, and neither company publishes that. Our 3% is what the weighting produced in our sample. It isn't a rule.

Reddit removed 154 million posts and comments in six months

Reddit's transparency report for July to December 2025 says users created about 2.21 billion posts and comments and 154,198,211 were removed, 52.7% by moderators and 44.7% by Reddit's admins. Across everything admins removed, 54% was spam. Of the moderator removals, 68.6% were done by automated tools such as AutoModerator.

The rules those systems enforce are short. Rule 2 asks you to participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest and not to spam. Rule 5 says don't intentionally mislead others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner. A seeded question from a fresh account, answered by a second account that happens to love your product, breaks both. It also tends to get removed, and a removed thread can't be cited.

Work the threads that are already being cited

Here's the order we'd use.

  • Run the questions your buyers ask in each engine you care about, and save every Reddit URL the answers cite. Keep one list per engine, since they barely overlap.
  • Read each thread. Check whether you're named, whether you're described correctly, and whether the complaint in it is still true.
  • Where you can add something useful, reply from an account that says who you are and answer the question that was asked. A disclosed reply that corrects a wrong fact sits inside the rules. An anonymous endorsement doesn't.
  • If the top comment names a real problem, fix the product or the page. A better reply won't outlast a true complaint.
  • Rerun the same questions a month later and see which threads are still cited. With 67 of our 101 threads cited only once, expect the list to change.

Where this could be wrong

This covers two engines. Perplexity, Claude and Gemini aren't in the sample, and any of them could lean on Reddit more or less.

Most questions came from one B2B software category. Consumer products, which people own for years and argue about in public, may draw on Reddit far more. We haven't measured that.

Our ChatGPT engine is OpenAI's API, not the consumer app. Search was optional for most of the window, which is why only 175 of its 913 answers cited anything.

A citation shows which link the engine displayed. It doesn't show how much that thread shaped the words in the answer. And five weeks is a short window, so the 3% could move.

Questions

Should we post in the subreddits that get cited?

Only where you'd have a reason to be there anyway, under an account that says who you are. Start by reading and replying in threads that are already cited for your questions. A new post has to survive moderation and then get retrieved before it can matter.

Do upvotes affect whether an engine cites a thread?

We don't know, and neither Google nor OpenAI says. We can see which threads were cited, not why they were picked.

Can Proofsource show which Reddit threads cite my category?

Yes. Proofsource lists the community threads each engine cited for the questions you track, with the question that surfaced each one, so you can start from the list the engines are already using.
