0.8% of AI citations point to the brand's own website.
Original research from 1,541 buyer answers by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, 4 to 8 Oct 2026. When AI answers a buyer question, it sends readers almost everywhere except the brand's own site.
Key findings
- 0.8%
- of 11,831 citations pointed to the brand's own website, across the 9 brands with a website on file. Only 5.7% of answers cited the brand's own site at all.
- 14.7 vs 4.7
- average citations per answer on Perplexity against ChatGPT. Claude gave 14.1 and Google AI Overviews 7.4.
- 66.3%
- of Google AI Overviews answers cited at least one community, social or video site, against 38.1% on Claude, 30.3% on Perplexity and 7.3% on ChatGPT.
- 10.2%
- of buyer answers cited youtube.com, the most cited domain. reddit.com (7.9%), en.wikipedia.org (7.8%) and linkedin.com (7.5%) followed.
- 4.6%
- of the brands named for a question, on a day all four engines answered it, were named by all four (266 of 5,761 brand, question and day pairs).
Scope: 14 brands, 1,541 buyer answers, 4 engines, 4 to 8 Oct 2026. Each answer is one sample, not a census.
The figures, engine by engine
Each bar is one figure from the study, drawn to scale within its chart. The same figures are in the CSV.
Answers per engine: Perplexity 386, Claude 386, Google AI Overviews 383, ChatGPT 386.
What it means for a brand
Your own site is rarely the page an AI answer leans on. What the answers cite instead are video, community, reference and app store pages, and pages about your category written by someone else. Three practical steps follow:
- Find the pages the answers cite for your questions. They differ by engine, so look per engine. Citations in Proofsource lists every cited domain and page, and whether each one mentions you.
- Get onto the pages that leave you out. A cited page that names your competitors and not you is a specific gap. Why AI does not recommend you walks through finding them, answer by answer.
- Make your own site readable anyway. When an engine does read your site, it should find a plain statement of what you are and who it is for. Check that AI crawlers can reach it with the free AI crawler checker.
The engines also rarely agree: a brand named by one engine is usually not named by all four for the same question on the same day, so measure each engine on its own. To see where your brand stands, compare AI visibility tool free trials.
Methodology
- Questions. Buyer questions only: questions a buyer asks that do not name the brand, for example a question about the best product in a category. Questions that name the brand were left out.
- Collection. Each question was asked on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, once per engine per day, from 4 to 8 Oct 2026, through the same pipeline Proofsource uses for its customers' daily scans. Each answer was stored with its full text and every source it cited.
- Citations. A citation is a link the engine listed as a source for its answer. Each was reduced to its domain. A citation counts as the brand's own site when its domain matches the website on file for the brand; brands without a website on file are left out of that figure.
- Community, social and video sites. YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, Quora, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X. An answer counts once if it cites any of them.
- Agreement. For each brand named for a question on a day all four engines answered it, we checked whether all four named it.
How Proofsource measures AI visibility in general, including intervals on every rate, is on the methodology page. Every Proofsource study is listed under research.
Caveats
- 14 brands is a small, non-random sample across mixed categories: software, consumer, local, travel and energy.
- The results describe these scans, not the whole web or every AI answer.
- Each figure rests on one sample per question per engine per day. AI answers vary from one asking to the next, so a repeat run would not give identical figures.
- The figures show what was cited, not why. They do not show that any engine favours one kind of source over another beyond these counts.
