AEO vs SEO: answer engines pick brands, Google ranks pages.
SEO is the work of ranking pages in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the work of being the brand an answer engine names when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews for a recommendation. Both start from the same website. They part ways at the moment of choice: a results page lists many links and lets the buyer pick, while an answer picks a few brands for them.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
The difference is who does the choosing. In search, the engine ranks and the buyer chooses among the results. In an answer engine, the engine chooses: it names a few brands in a sentence and cites a few sources. So AEO is judged on whether your brand is in that sentence, and SEO on where your page sits in the list.
| Dimension | AEO | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Be the brand an answer engine names, and a source it links, when a buyer asks a question. | Have your pages ranked and clicked in search results. |
| Unit of success | Named or not in one written answer, on one engine, on one run. | A URL's position on a results page, and the click it earns. |
| How the system chooses | Picks a handful of brands to recommend from the sources it read or from what its model learned, and writes them into a sentence. | Orders many indexed pages by relevance and quality, and leaves the choosing to the reader. |
| Signals | How the cited lists, reviews and comparisons describe you; crawler access for each engine; a clear, consistent statement of what you are. | Indexability, relevance to the query, and links and other quality signals. |
| What to measure | Mention rate with an interval, position when named, competitors named instead, citation share and answer accuracy. | Rankings, impressions, click-through rate and organic sessions. |
| Cadence | Daily or weekly samples of the same questions, read as a rate over several days. | Weekly or monthly reporting on slow-moving trends. |
| Tools | AI visibility tools that run your buyer questions across engines; see sixteen of them compared. | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, rank trackers, site audit crawlers and web analytics. |
How does an answer engine pick which brands to name?
By one of two paths, and the engine decides which, question by question. It can answer from what its model learned in training, or it can search the web, read what comes back and write from that. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may also use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response.
The path matters more than most brands expect. In a Proofsource sample of 364 scored answers, ChatGPT named the brand in 78% of the answers where it searched and 6% where it didn't, and 147 of 215 of its answers, 68%, ran no search at all. In the same sample, every Google AI Overview that left the brand out still cited other pages: the engine looked, and the answer went elsewhere (check whether the engine searched at all).
When the engine does search, the pages it reads are mostly not yours. Across 13,386 citations in 1,205 answers, eight tracked competitors' sites took 16% and the brand's own site 0.87% (competitor websites get cited, yours does not). The brands named follow the lists, reviews and comparison pages that make up the rest.
Does the click still matter in AEO?
Less than in SEO, because the answer is often the end of the visit. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025: when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a result 8% of the time against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits (our summary of the study). Google has disputed the figures. Either way, in AEO the mention is the outcome, and the click is a bonus you cannot count on.
Which work serves both AEO and SEO?
- Indexable pages a snippet can be drawn from. Google's requirement for a supporting link in AI Overviews is the same as for a search snippet: indexed and eligible to show with one.
- Open doors for every search crawler. Googlebot for Search and AI Overviews, OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and the bots of the other engines your buyers use, at robots.txt and at your CDN.
- Answer-first pages. The answer in the first sentence under a heading that asks the question, with prices, who it is for and how it compares, in plain text.
- Accurate third-party coverage. Reviews, listings and comparison articles earn links for SEO, and for AEO they are much of what the answer is built from.
- One clear identity. The same plain description of what you are, everywhere, so neither a search engine nor a model confuses you with a similar name.
Which work is AEO only?
- Testing phrasings, not keywords. A brand named on one phrasing of a buyer question was named on a sibling phrasing the same day 55% of the time in Proofsource's sampling of 13,994 answers (rewording moves answers more than asking again). Track the shapes buyers ask in.
- Tracking each engine on its own. All four engines agreed on the brand in only 32% of the question days where any of them named it (four engines rarely name the same brands).
- Reading the cited pages on lost questions. They show where a competitor is listed and you are not, which is usually a cheaper fix than rewriting your own site.
- Checking what the answer says about you. Being named with the wrong price or category is a problem a ranking report never shows.
- Measuring a rate, not a screenshot. 47% of day-to-day changes in Proofsource's daily sample reversed the next day (half of daily changes reverse).
What should you measure for AEO and for SEO?
For SEO: rankings, impressions, click-through rate and organic sessions, as before. Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Web search type, so it reports your clicks from those features but not the brands the answer named.
For AEO: on unbranded buyer questions, the mention rate per engine with an interval, your position when named, the competitors named instead, your share of the citations, and, on questions that name you, whether the answer is accurate. Proofsource measures exactly this on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews: every answer kept, every rate with a 95% Wilson interval, and a drafted fix for each lost question, held for your approval. What an AEO tool does covers the category.
Three signs AEO needs its own report
Rankings hold, mentions don't
Your pages keep their positions while answers to the same questions name competitors.
Engines disagree
ChatGPT names you on a question that Perplexity or AI Overviews answers without you.
Traffic falls, demand doesn't
Fewer clicks on questions buyers still ask, because the answer is now the destination.
What people ask about AEO and SEO
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
No, though it builds on SEO. The site work largely overlaps. What changes is the outcome: SEO wins a position on a results page, AEO wins a mention inside one written answer, and that mention varies from one run to the next, so it has to be measured as a rate.
Should I start with AEO or SEO?
Make sure the SEO basics hold first, because they gate both: Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews, and ChatGPT search does not show sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot. Then measure the answers, because a sound site can still be left out of them.
Do AEO and SEO target the same keywords?
They start from the same demand, but AEO works from whole buyer questions rather than short keywords, and the wording matters. In Proofsource's sampling, a brand named on one phrasing of a question was named on a sibling phrasing the same day only 55% of the time.
Can I measure AEO in Google Search Console?
Only partly. Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report under the Web search type, together with the rest of your Search traffic. It does not tell you which brands an answer named, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude are not in it at all.
How does AEO relate to GEO?
They are two names for the same work. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper; AEO, answer engine optimization, is the name more common in marketing. Both mean being named and cited in AI answers.
