How to rank in ChatGPT: let OpenAI's crawlers in, be quotable, then measure.

OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula for ChatGPT, and anyone selling one is guessing. What is documented is the plumbing: ChatGPT answers from what its model learned, or from a web search it runs, and OpenAI names the crawlers that feed each path. So ChatGPT SEO comes down to six practical steps, in the order they gate each other: find the questions you lose, let the right crawler read your site, make your pages easy to quote, be on the pages ChatGPT cites, make it obvious which company you are, and measure the result as a rate.

What does it mean to rank in ChatGPT?

There is no list of ten blue links to climb. ChatGPT writes one answer, and for a buyer question that answer either names your brand or names someone else. When it searches the web, it also shows links to the pages it used. Ranking in ChatGPT therefore means two things: being one of the brands the answer recommends, and being one of the sources it links.

Neither is fixed. OpenAI documents that its models are non-deterministic by default, and the product decides per question whether to search. One answer is one sample. The steps below improve your odds; only repeated measurement tells you whether they worked:

  1. List the buyer questions where ChatGPT leaves you out
  2. Let OAI-SearchBot read your site
  3. Make your pages easy to quote
  4. Get onto the pages ChatGPT already cites
  5. Make it obvious which company you are
  6. Measure the rate, not one screenshot

Step 1: List the buyer questions where ChatGPT leaves you out

Write down the ten to twenty questions a buyer asks before choosing a product like yours, in their words, and record which brands ChatGPT names for each.

Ask from a logged-out window, or with memory off, because a logged-in ChatGPT can lean on what it remembers about you. Note three things per question: whether you were named, who was named instead, and which pages were linked if it searched.

Ask each question more than once. A brand named in one run and missing in the next is not yet a win or a loss, so the list you start from should record how often, not whether.

Step 2: Let OAI-SearchBot read your site

Check that robots.txt, and your CDN's bot settings, let OpenAI's search crawler fetch your pages.

OpenAI documents separate agents for separate jobs, and each is controlled on its own. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train future models. ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person's question calls for it. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes roughly a day to reach its systems.

Run your domain through the free robots.txt checker, which shows the verdict and the deciding line for those three OpenAI agents, plus Googlebot and Bingbot. robots.txt is only half of it: a firewall or CDN rule can still turn away a crawler that robots.txt allows.

Step 3: Make your pages easy to quote

Put the answer to each buyer question in plain text, in the first sentence under a heading that asks it, and make sure that text is in the HTML a crawler receives.

A crawler that does not run your JavaScript sees only what the server sends. If your pricing, your product list or your one-line description appears only after a script runs, a search crawler may read an empty page. Keep facts current: an answer can repeat old copy from a page until that page is fetched again.

An llms.txt file is a cheap, clear brief for models, but no major answer engine has said it ranks pages by it. If you publish one, check it with the llms.txt validator and treat it as a summary, not a lever.

Step 4: Get onto the pages ChatGPT already cites

For the questions you lose, open the pages ChatGPT linked, and earn an accurate place on them: a review, a comparison, a listing, a thread.

A brand's own domain is one source among many. In the public Tesla example, across 25 buyer questions, ChatGPT cited tesla.com 12 times in 93 citations, while the other three engines together cited it 5 times in 915. Most links still went to other sites. When ChatGPT prefers third-party pages for your category, the fix is on those pages, and the citations on the questions you lose tell you which ones.

Step 5: Make it obvious which company you are

Say what you are in one plain sentence, the same way on your homepage, your profiles and your listings, so the model does not confuse you with a similar name.

Without a search, ChatGPT answers from what its model learned in training, and it can only recommend a brand it can tell apart from others. Consistent naming, a clear category and the same description everywhere make that easier. Vendors do not publish when the next model trains or what goes into it, so treat this as a slow, compounding step rather than a quick win.

Step 6: Measure the rate, not one screenshot

Re-ask the same questions on a schedule, count how often you are named and cited, and compare that rate with the one before your change.

Record a baseline before you change anything, and log the date each page changed. A later rise counts once it is bigger than the margin of error around the rate. Three things to ignore

Ranking formulas

OpenAI publishes none. Advice that claims to know the weights is a guess.

Blocking GPTBot to hide

It limits training, not ChatGPT search. That is OAI-SearchBot's job.

How does Proofsource measure progress in ChatGPT?

Proofsource asks ChatGPT your buyer questions from a clean, logged-out context, which is closest to a first-time buyer, and stores each answer: the brands it named, in what order, the pages it cited, and the searches it ran on the way.

Each mention rate carries a 95% Wilson interval, so a change counts only once it clears the noise. The same questions run on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, which shows whether a fix aimed at ChatGPT moved the others too. The method is on the methodology page; the free trial is 2 days of full AI visibility, today and tomorrow, 25 questions on 4 engines, no card.

Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?

Partly. ChatGPT search is fed by OpenAI's own crawler, so a page Google ranks well can still be one ChatGPT never fetched. And when ChatGPT does not search, no page ranks at all: the answer comes from the model. Good Search habits, such as clear text, accurate facts and a crawlable site, help on both.

The engine pages explain the differences: how ChatGPT decides which brands to name, and how to rank in Google AI Overviews. The cross-engine plan is in the AI visibility guide.

What people ask about ChatGPT SEO

What is ChatGPT SEO?

The work of getting a brand named, and its pages cited, in ChatGPT answers. It overlaps with ordinary SEO on crawlable, clear pages, and differs in that ChatGPT uses its own crawler, sometimes answers without searching, and writes one answer instead of a ranked list.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT?

OpenAI publishes no timeline. A change ChatGPT search can find may show up once the page is fetched again; a change in what the model knows waits for a future training run, which no vendor schedules publicly. Measure the same questions over several weeks.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my ChatGPT visibility?

Not in ChatGPT search. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the search crawler, controlled separately. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of future training, which may matter for answers given without a search.

Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the answer, by OpenAI's account. OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT; they are labelled sponsored, sit apart from the answer, and OpenAI says they do not influence what ChatGPT answers. An ad is not the same as being the brand the answer recommends.

Do I need an llms.txt file to rank in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI has not said ChatGPT ranks pages by it. It costs little to publish and can help the agents and developer tools that do read it.
