How does ChatGPT build an answer?
- Without a search, ChatGPT answers from what its model learned in training. Brands that appear often on pages it learned from are the ones it reaches for.
- With ChatGPT search, it fetches current pages and lists them as sources. OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, decides which sites can appear there.
- The answer is rewritten every time, so the same question can name different brands from one run to the next.
Which crawlers decide whether ChatGPT can read your site?
As documented by the vendor. Check your CDN as well as robots.txt: an edge bot-blocking setting can turn a crawler away even when robots.txt allows it.

What did ChatGPT say in our own scan?
- Across 20 category questions about AI visibility tools, ChatGPT named Profound in 13 answers and Otterly.AI and Peec AI in 9 each.
- Asked 5 questions about Proofsource by name, ChatGPT described a different company in all 5. One answer assumed we meant Profound.
- The lesson for any new brand: if the model has not learned who you are, a question that names you is no protection.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
Not directly. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search, and they are controlled separately. Blocking GPTBot affects what future models may learn; blocking OAI-SearchBot affects ChatGPT search.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?
