Google AI Overviews tracker

How Google AI Overviews choose the brands they name, and how to track them.

Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries above some search results, built from pages in Google's search index. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be used, and ranking on page one does not guarantee a mention. Proofsource tracks the questions where AI Overviews name you, and who they name instead.

How does Google AI Overviews build an answer?

  • Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no special files or markup are needed.
  • AI Overviews may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics, combined into one answer. A page can be used for a sub-question it answers well.
  • Googlebot does the crawling. Google-Extended, which governs use for Gemini training, does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search.

Which crawlers decide whether Google AI Overviews can read your site?

As documented by the vendor. Check your CDN as well as robots.txt: an edge bot-blocking setting can turn a crawler away even when robots.txt allows it.

How do you get named more often by Google AI Overviews?

  1. Get the page that answers the question indexed and snippet-eligible; check it is not marked nosnippet or noindex by accident.
  2. Answer the sub-questions a buyer would ask, not only the headline question.
  3. Do not spend time on special AI files for Google: it says none are needed.

How does Proofsource track Google AI Overviews?

Proofsource asks Google AI Overviews the buyer questions you approve, alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, with the same wording on each. It records whether you are named, in what position, next to whom, and which pages are cited.

Paid plans ask every question every day; the free trial runs 2 scans, today and tomorrow. Each percentage carries a 95% Wilson interval, so a change is flagged only once it is bigger than the noise. See the methodology.

Where a Google AI Overviews number can mislead: AI Overviews do not appear for every query, and which queries trigger one changes without notice. A drop can mean Google stopped showing an overview for that question, not that it dropped you.

Questions

What people ask about Google AI Overviews and brands

How do I get my brand into Google AI Overviews?

Google's guidance is to follow normal Search best practice: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Beyond that, answer the specific questions buyers ask, including the sub-questions, on pages Google already trusts.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. To limit what AI features show from your pages, Google points to nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.

Do I need llms.txt or special markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google states you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data to appear in its AI features.
