How Google AI Mode chooses the brands it names, and how to track it.

Google AI Mode does not answer the question that was typed. It breaks it into subtopics, runs many searches at once, and writes one answer from the pages that come back, naming a few brands and linking a few sources. To be named you need pages Google can show with a snippet, on the sub-questions buyers actually ask. AI Mode and AI Overviews write different answers to the same question, so each has to be tracked on its own.

Does Proofsource track Google AI Mode?

Yes, on Managed or a Custom plan: our team switches AI Mode on after a call, and tracks it separately from AI Overviews. Below is how AI Mode chooses brands, from Google's own documentation, and a method you can also run by hand.

How does Google AI Mode choose the brands it names?

It writes its own searches first. Google's guidance for site owners says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one response. Announcing AI Mode in May 2025, Google's Head of Search described it as breaking your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf. A Google engineering director later put the ordinary case at about a dozen searches; Deep Search in AI Mode can issue hundreds. We collected Google's statements in one question becomes a dozen searches, and the term is defined in the query fan-out entry.

It names the brands those searches surface. Each sub-question, on price, alternatives, who a product suits or what it connects to, returns its own pages. The answer is assembled from them, so a brand that only answers the head term can be left out of every sub-question that decides the shortlist. Most of those pages are lists, reviews and comparisons written by someone else: in the category we sampled for that post, listicles were 44% of what ChatGPT cited for a best-of question.

Eligibility is ordinary Search eligibility. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link, that there are no additional technical requirements, and that you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data.

It runs on Gemini, inside Search. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews use a custom version of Gemini in Search. That is not the same as the Gemini app, which answers on its own terms; see how Gemini picks the brands it names.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

They share an index and an eligibility rule, and little else that a tracker can rely on. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so the responses and the links they show will vary. A brand named in an AI Overview can be missing from AI Mode for the same question on the same day, and the reverse.

How do you track whether AI Mode names your brand?

Separately from AI Overviews, and never from one screenshot. Search Console reports AI feature traffic inside the Web search type, so it cannot show which searches AI Mode ran or which brands it named. The only way to see that is to ask AI Mode the questions buyers ask and record what comes back.

  1. Write the fan-out yourself. Take each buyer question and list the ten or twelve sub-questions a buyer has to settle under it: price, alternatives, who it suits, integrations, why people leave. That list is your real question set.
  2. Ask from a clean context. Signed out, in the market you sell to, with the same wording each time, so the answer reflects a first-time buyer and not your own history.
  3. Record four things per answer. Whether you are named, in what position, which competitors are named instead, and which pages are linked.
  4. Repeat before you conclude. In the categories we sample, 9% to 27% of the names in an answer change from one day to the next, depending on the engine, and 47% of day-to-day changes reverse a day later (half of daily changes reverse). Read a rate over several days.
  5. Check the tool sees the surface. Google loads many AI Overviews after the results page. Our own AI Overview sampler once recorded no overview on 193 of 201 searches because it never waited for them (the tracker that missed 96%). Ask any tool how it captures AI Mode, by name.

How does Proofsource track Google?

Google AI Overviews on every plan, and Google AI Mode on Managed or a Custom plan, asked the same buyer questions as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, on a daily or weekly schedule. For each answer it keeps whether you were named, the position, the competitors named instead and the pages linked, and each mention rate carries a 95% Wilson interval. The engines rarely agree: when any of the four named the brand in our sample, all four agreed only 32% of the time (four engines rarely name the same brands).

For the other Google surface, read how AI Overviews choose brands, what an AI Overview tracker should record and how to rank in AI Overviews. The method behind every number is on the methodology page.

What people ask about Google AI Mode and brands

Does Proofsource track Google AI Mode?

Yes, on Managed or a Custom plan: our team switches AI Mode on for your brands after a call, and tracks it separately from AI Overviews. Self-serve plans track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Meta AI are all switched on the same way.

Is Google AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. Both are part of Google Search and both may use query fan-out, but Google says they may use different models and techniques, so the answers and the links they show will vary. A brand named in one can be missing from the other for the same question.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Only mixed in. Google reports clicks and impressions from its AI features in the Performance report under the Web search type, together with the rest of your Search traffic. It does not split AI Mode out, show the searches it ran, or say which brands the answer named.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements, no new machine readable files or AI text files, and no special schema.org structured data. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.

How many searches does AI Mode run for one question?

Google does not publish a count per question. A Google engineering director described it as about a dozen searches in the time of one, and Google says Deep Search in AI Mode can issue hundreds. Treat both as orders of magnitude.
