An AI Overview tracker shows when Google's AI summary names you, and when it shows up at all.

An AI Overview tracker searches Google for the questions your buyers ask, records whether an AI Overview appears, which brands its text names and which pages it links, and repeats that over time. Proofsource tracks Google AI Overviews next to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. This page covers what a tracker has to record to be trusted, and how the tools that cover AI Overviews compare.

What does an AI Overview tracker record?

For every question it checks, a tracker should land each result in one of three states, because they call for three different responses:

  1. No AI Overview shown. Google answered with ordinary results only. There is nothing to win on that query today, and it is not a loss.
  2. An overview that leaves you out. Google wrote a summary, and it names or links other brands. This is the gap worth working on.
  3. An overview that names or links you. Worth keeping, and worth watching, because the sources behind it rotate.

A tool that folds the first state into the second will report losses that never happened. Google shows AI Overviews for some queries and not others, and which queries get one changes without notice, so "you dropped out" and "the overview disappeared" have to be told apart before anyone rewrites a page.

Keyword tracking or question tracking: which does an AI Overview tracker do?

Both kinds exist, and they answer different questions. SEO rank trackers grew an AI Overview column: for each keyword they already follow, they note whether an overview appeared and whether your URL sat among its links. That suits a team that already reports on keywords.

Brand trackers start from the buyer's full question, such as "which home battery is best for whole-house backup", and read the overview's text for brand names. That catches the case a keyword tracker misses: an overview that recommends you by name while linking someone else's review of you, or one that links your page while recommending a rival.

A brand can be named without being linked, and linked without being named. A useful tracker records both, per question, so you can see which one you are missing.

Are AI Overviews and AI Mode tracked the same way?

No. AI Overviews are the summaries above some ordinary results. AI Mode is Google's separate conversational search, where a user asks follow-ups. Google says both may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics, and that the same rule decides which pages can be shown: indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.

They still write different answers to the same question, so tracking one does not tell you about the other. Check which of the two a tool actually samples, by name, on the plan you would buy. Proofsource samples AI Overviews on every plan; the engines each plan covers are listed on the pricing page.

Why does the AI Overview for the same question change from day to day?

Three things move it. Google may stop or start showing an overview for the query. The sub-searches behind the answer can return different pages. And the summary itself is written fresh, so the brands it lists and their order can shift between two checks on the same day.

The sources are often not the brand's own site. In the public Tesla example, Google AI Overviews named Tesla in 16 of 25 buyer answers, yet its most-cited sites were youtube.com, 20 times, and reddit.com, 15 times, while tesla.com was cited once. Asked for the best home battery for whole-house backup, the overview did not name Tesla at all, where ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude each named the Powerwall 3. A tracker that shows the linked pages per answer tells you where to show up; one that only counts mentions does not.

Three facts per question, every check

Did an overview appear?

Recorded on its own, so a missing overview never counts as a missing brand.

Which brands it names

Read from the summary text, in order, including brands that are not linked.

Which pages it links

The supporting links, so you can see which video, thread or review won the slot.

How does Proofsource track Google AI Overviews?

Proofsource is an AI intelligence platform that shows which buyer questions name your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews, who gets named instead, and exactly what to fix. For AI Overviews, it searches Google for each of your buyer questions, reads the overview when one appears, and stores the brands named, the pages linked and, where Google exposes them, the related searches it ran to build the answer.

  • No overview is its own result. When Google shows none, Proofsource records that the engine gave no answer, not that you were left out. A page that fails to load is recorded as failed, never as an empty overview.
  • The same questions on 4 engines. AI Overviews sit beside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, so you can see whether a gap is Google's alone.
  • Intervals on every rate. A 95% Wilson interval shows whether a change from one week to the next is bigger than the noise.
  • Daily on Custom, or hourly if you choose. The trial runs 2 scans, today and tomorrow.

How Google chooses what to show is covered on the Google AI Overviews engine page.

What should you look for in an AI Overview tracker?

  1. A separate "no overview" state. Ask how the tool reports a query where Google showed no summary. If the answer is "as not mentioned", its loss counts are inflated.
  2. Names read from the text, not only links. Being recommended without a link still shapes the buyer's shortlist.
  3. Your buyers' questions. Short keywords trigger different overviews from the full questions people type or speak.
  4. The related searches. Knowing which sub-questions Google searched tells you which page to write.
  5. Repeat checks with an interval, because a single morning's overview is one draw.
  6. The other engines too. A buyer who skips Google asks ChatGPT or Perplexity instead.

What people ask about tracking AI Overviews

What is an AI Overview tracker?

Software that checks Google for a list of queries on a schedule and records whether an AI Overview appears, which brands it names and which pages it links. Some are features of SEO rank trackers; others, like Proofsource, track AI Overviews as one engine among several.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic separately?

No. Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type. Clicks from an overview are counted, but not split out, which is why a separate tracker is needed to see whether you appear.

Why did my brand disappear from an AI Overview?

Check three things in order: whether Google still shows an overview for that query, whether the pages it links have changed, and whether the drop is bigger than the interval on your rate. A single check that misses you is not yet evidence of a loss.

Does an AI Overview tracker also cover AI Mode?

Only if it names AI Mode in its engine list. AI Mode is a separate surface that writes its own answers, so coverage of one says nothing about the other. Proofsource tracks AI Overviews on every plan; its pricing page lists the engines each plan covers.

Can I track AI Overviews for free?

Proofsource's trial covers Google AI Overviews with the other panel engines: 2 days of full AI visibility, today and tomorrow, 25 questions on 4 engines, no card. Other tools' trials are in the table, each with its source.
