What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows above some search results, with links to the pages they draw on. They appear at the top of a Google results page for some searches, answer the question in a few paragraphs or a list, and link to sources. Because they sit above the links, a brand named in the overview is seen before any result is clicked.

How do Google AI Overviews choose their sources?

Google AI Overviews choose sources from Google's search index, and Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link (Google Search Central).

Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics and data sources, combined into one response. A page can therefore be used for a sub-question it answers well even when it does not rank for the original search. Google states that there are no extra requirements and no special optimisation needed beyond its normal search guidance, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear.

How is visibility in AI Overviews measured?

Visibility in AI Overviews is measured the same way as on any engine: ask the buyer questions, read whether the overview names you, and record which pages it links to.

Two things are particular to it. An overview only appears for some searches, so a question can return no overview at all, and that answer should be counted separately rather than as a miss. And the links shown are chosen from Google's index, so a page that is not indexed, or is marked nosnippet, cannot be one of them.

What do AI Overviews look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (4 Oct 2026), Google AI Overviews named Tesla in 16 of 25 answers to buyer questions, level with ChatGPT for the most of the four engines (64%, with a 95% range of about 45% to 80%).

It cited youtube.com 20 times and reddit.com 15 times, and tesla.com once. On the five solar panel installation questions it named Tesla in 4, more than any other engine. Asked for the best home battery for whole-house backup, it did not name Tesla, while the other three engines named the Powerwall 3. And asked "What is Tesla?", it opened with the magnetic unit of the same name before reaching the company.

How can a page appear in AI Overviews?

A page appears in AI Overviews by being indexable, snippet-eligible and the clearest answer to the question or one of its sub-questions.

  • Check the page is indexed and not marked noindex or nosnippet by accident.
  • Put the answer in the first sentence under a heading phrased as the question.
  • Answer the common sub-questions plainly: price, limits, who it is for, how it compares.
  • Earn a place on the video, forum and comparison pages AI Overviews cites for your category.
  • Re-measure on the same questions; one check of one overview is a sample, not a result.

Where do you see AI Overviews in Proofsource?

Google AI Overviews is one of the engines every Proofsource plan asks, alongside the rest of the panel: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Its answers, mention rate and cited pages appear beside the other engines'. See how Google AI Overviews choose the brands they name and the AI Visibility feature page.

Common questions about Google AI Overviews

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google's controls are the same as for snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit how a page is shown, including in AI features. Using them also limits how the page appears in normal results, so weigh that before applying them.

Do I need special markup or an AI text file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Indexable, snippet-eligible pages that answer the question are what count.

Are AI Overviews the same as AI Mode?

No. AI Overviews are summaries shown above some normal search results. AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience. Google documents both on the same page and says both may use query fan-out.

Which tools track ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity?

AI visibility tools ask the same questions on several engines and compare the answers. Proofsource asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews on every plan, with the same questions on each, so you can see where Google AI Overviews differs from the rest.
