What is citation share in AI search?

Citation share is the share of all the citations in AI answers that point at a given website. When an AI engine answers, it often lists the pages it drew on. Count every one of those citations across a set of answers, and citation share is the fraction that go to one site: yours, a competitor's, or a review site that decides your category.

How should I define and calculate AI citation share for my category?

Citation share = citations pointing at a site divided by every citation in the same answers, for a fixed set of questions and engines. A citation is a page the engine links to or lists as a source.

Two choices keep it honest. First, decide whether you count domains or pages: a domain total tells you whose site is trusted, a page total tells you which page earns it. Second, report the companion figure, the share of answers that cite the site at least once. A site cited ten times in one long answer and a site cited once in each of ten answers have the same count and very different reach.

What does citation share look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (4 Oct 2026), the four engines gave 1,008 citations across 100 answers to 25 buyer questions, and 17 of them pointed at tesla.com: a citation share of about 1.7%, with a 95% range of about 1.1% to 2.7%.

The engines differed far more than that average suggests. ChatGPT cited tesla.com 12 times in 93 citations, about 13%. The other three engines together cited it 5 times in 915. Across buyer and brand questions, the most cited sites were youtube.com (29 citations), en.wikipedia.org (24) and reddit.com (20), all ahead of tesla.com. Even a brand everyone knows is one source among hundreds.

Is being cited the same as being named?

No: a mention is your name in the answer text, a citation is a page listed as a source, and either can happen without the other.

An engine can name your brand while citing a competitor's comparison page, which means someone else's page is describing you. It can also cite your page without naming you, which means your page informed the answer but the shortlist went elsewhere. Track mention rate and citation share side by side, and read the cited pages on the questions you lose: they name the pages to win.

How can I identify content gaps behind competitors' higher citation share?

List the pages cited on the questions where a competitor is named and you are not, then sort them by how often they are cited. The gaps fall into a few kinds:

  • Third-party comparison, review and list pages that name the competitor and not you. These are usually the biggest lever, and many accept corrections or submissions.
  • Pages on the competitor's own site that answer a sub-question directly, such as pricing, limits or setup. A page of your own that answers the same sub-question plainly can compete.
  • Video, forum and reference pages. These are earned rather than written, but the engines' choices show which communities and channels matter in your category.
  • Pages of yours that exist but cannot be read: blocked crawlers or text that only appears after JavaScript runs. See crawler access.

Where do you see citation share in Proofsource?

The Citations tab in Proofsource shows Source share, the share of every citation that points at a site, and Source reach, the share of answers that cite the site at least once, for your site and the competitors you track. The Citations feature page shows the screens.

Common questions about Citation share

Can these platforms track brand mentions, citations, and source links?

Most AI visibility tools record the brands each answer names and the pages it cites. The useful ones keep the cited URLs, not just the domains, mark which cited pages mention you, and let you filter by engine, because each engine cites very differently.

Why does my citation share differ so much between engines?

Because each engine sources answers differently. Some search the web for every answer and cite many pages, others answer mostly from model knowledge and cite few. In the Tesla example, one engine gave 375 citations to 25 answers and another gave 93, so the same site can hold a large share on one and almost none on another.

Is a higher citation share always better?

It is better to be cited than not, but a citation share has to be read with the mention rate. If engines cite your page and still name competitors, the page is informing answers without winning the shortlist. That usually means the page is missing a direct, quotable answer to the buyer's question.

Does citation share count pages or domains?

Either, as long as the figure says which. A domain share shows whose site engines trust overall. A page share shows which specific page earns the citations, which is what you act on.
