What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named, and your pages cited, in the answers AI assistants give. An answer engine replies with one written answer instead of a page of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews all work this way. AEO is what you do so that answer names you, describes you correctly, and cites your pages.
What does AEO involve?
AEO involves three kinds of work: pages that answer buyer questions directly, a place on the third-party pages engines cite, and a site AI crawlers can read.
- Answer pages: pages that state, in their first sentence, the answer to a question buyers ask, with the facts an engine needs to quote (who it is for, what it costs, how it compares).
- Third-party sources: the comparison, review, list, video and forum pages engines cite for your category. Many accept corrections or submissions.
- Access: AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt and at your CDN, and page text present in the HTML rather than only after JavaScript runs. See crawler access.
- Identity: a plain statement of what you are, and what you are not if you share a name with another company, so answers about you describe you.
How do you measure AEO?
You measure AEO by asking the engines your buyer questions before and after a change, on the same questions and engines, and comparing the answers.
The core figure is AI visibility, as a mention rate with an interval, read beside who is named instead and the pages cited. A change only means something once it is larger than the interval, so measure more than once. Questions that name you are tracked separately, to check the answers about you are accurate.
What does AEO look like in a real example?
In the public Tesla example (4 Oct 2026), the 100 answers to 25 buyer questions cited 455 different websites, and fewer than 2 in every 100 citations went to tesla.com. Across buyer and brand questions, youtube.com was cited 29 times, en.wikipedia.org 24 and reddit.com 20, against 17 for tesla.com.
For AEO that means most of the leverage sits on pages the brand does not own. The engines also disagreed on the same questions: asked for the best home battery for whole-house backup, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude named the Powerwall 3 and Google AI Overviews did not. AEO work is chosen question by question and engine by engine, from what the answers and their sources actually say.
How can I improve my chances of being recommended over competitors?
Start from the questions you lose: read who is named instead and which pages are cited, then fix the gap those pages reveal.
- Find the buyer questions where competitors are named and you are not.
- List the pages cited in those answers, and mark which ones mention you.
- Get onto the cited pages that leave you out, with accurate facts or a fair comparison.
- Publish a page that answers the question directly, with sources for every claim about other products.
- Re-measure on the same questions and engines, and keep what moved the answers.
Where does AEO fit in Proofsource?
Proofsource is built around that loop: it shows which buyer questions name you, who is named instead, the pages each engine cites and what to fix, then re-measures. See what an AEO tool does and the Citations feature page.
Common questions about Answer engine optimization (AEO)
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Yes, in practice. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) both mean getting your brand named and your pages cited in AI answers. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper; AEO is more common in marketing.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Engines that search the web read pages that are indexed and readable, so SEO basics still apply. AEO adds what SEO does not measure: whether the written answer names you, how it describes you, and which pages it cites.
Does llms.txt help AEO?
There is no evidence that it does. It is a proposed file listing your key pages for language models, harmless to add, but Google says no special AI text files are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Readable pages and open crawler access matter far more.
Which pages do AI engines cite most?
It depends on the category and the engine, but for "best X" and comparison questions engines lean on pages that compare options: list articles, alternatives and versus pages, review sites, videos and forums. Read the citations on your own lost questions to see which ones matter for you.

- Query fan-out
Query fan-out is when an AI engine splits one question into several related searches and builds its answer from all the results.
Worked example: Tesla, public AI answers, 4 Oct 2026: Proofsource's first scan of Tesla, 25 buyer questions and 5 brand questions, one answer per question on each of four engines. A small sample from one brand, shown as an example, not a benchmark.
