AI referral traffic, explained
AI referral traffic is the human visits that reach your website after someone clicks a link inside an AI assistant's answer. When ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude cites your page and a reader clicks through, the visit usually arrives with the assistant's domain as its referrer, so analytics tools can count it apart from Google search, social or direct traffic.
It matters because AI answers are where many buyers now start. A brand can be mentioned often and still get few clicks, or be mentioned rarely and get high-intent visitors who convert well. Counting mentions tells you about presence; counting referral visits, conversions and revenue tells you whether that presence pays.
Proofsource connects to your Google Analytics 4 property, recognizes sessions sent by AI assistants and stores sessions, key events and revenue per day, assistant and landing page. The AI Referrals screen then shows totals, a per-assistant table, the landing pages each assistant sends people to and a trend chart. Where your analytics stops syncing, the chart shows a gap instead of a fake zero, so a quiet week is never confused with a broken connection.
How it works
Visits, conversions and revenue that ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude send to your site, by assistant and landing page, from your own Google Analytics 4.
Connect Google Analytics 4
Sign in with Google and pick the property for your site. Proofsource reads it; it never changes your tags or settings.
We separate AI visits
Sessions whose referrer is an AI assistant are counted apart from search, social and direct, per assistant and per landing page.
Daily rows, kept per page
Sessions, key events and revenue are stored per day and page, so you can compare any period with the one before it.
Read the trend and the table
Switch between sessions, conversions and revenue, by day, week or month, and see which assistant grows and which landing pages it feeds.

Every capability, live today
6 shipped capabilities behind AI referral traffic, each in the product now.
AI Referrals screen with landing pages
One screen for the visits, conversions and revenue AI assistants send you, with the pages each assistant sends people to, as an extra report alongside Google Analytics.
Referrals by assistant
Each assistant's share of AI visits, change against the previous period, conversion rate and revenue per session.
Trend chart and period switch
Sessions, conversions or revenue over the last 7, 28 or 90 days, grouped by day, week or month. Days after the last analytics sync show as a gap, never as zero.
Unattributed sessions row
Older sessions recorded before the per-assistant split are shown as their own row, so totals still add up.
AI referrals API
The same AI referral numbers are available through the Proofsource API for your own reports.
Daily history and live updates
Sessions, key events and revenue from AI assistants are kept per day and landing page, so any period can be compared, and open dashboards update on their own when new data lands.
Who it is for
Prove AI search sends buyers
Show leadership the conversions and revenue that came from ChatGPT and Perplexity last quarter, next to paid and organic.
Know which pages AI sends people to
See the landing pages each assistant feeds and update the ones that already earn AI clicks first.
Compare assistants fairly
Conversion rate and revenue per session per assistant tell you which AI audience is worth more, not just which is bigger.
Report AI traffic per client
Pull the same numbers through the API into your client reporting, with gaps marked instead of guessed.
Why it matters
Revenue, not just visits
Key events and revenue sit next to sessions, so AI search can be judged like any other channel.
No fake zeros
A missing sync shows as a gap. You never read a drop that is really a data delay.
Fair comparisons
Every number has a previous-period change, so growth is measured against your own baseline.
Your data, read-only
Proofsource reads your existing Google Analytics 4 property and changes nothing in it.

Questions about AI referral traffic
How do I track ChatGPT referral traffic in Google Analytics 4?
In GA4 you can filter sessions by source for chatgpt.com and other assistant domains, but you have to rebuild the filter for every report. Proofsource connects to your GA4 property, recognizes AI assistant referrers for you and keeps sessions, key events and revenue per assistant and landing page, ready to compare across periods.
Which AI assistants does it count?
It counts visits whose referrer is an AI assistant, including ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude. Assistants that do not pass a referrer cannot be told apart from direct traffic by any analytics tool, and Proofsource says so rather than guessing.
Does it show revenue or only visits?
Both. Sessions, key events (your GA4 conversions) and revenue are stored per day and page, and the per-assistant table shows conversion rate and revenue per session.
Why is there a gap at the end of my chart?
The chart stops where your last Google Analytics sync stopped. Proofsource draws the missing days as a gap so you never mistake a sync delay for a real drop to zero.
What is the Unattributed row?
Some older sessions were stored before the per-assistant split existed. They are kept as one Unattributed row so your totals stay complete without assigning them to the wrong assistant.
Does Proofsource change my Google Analytics setup?
No. The connection is read-only. If you do not have GA4 yet, Proofsource can set it up for you and check the tag on your site, which is a separate step you start yourself.
How is this different from Peec AI or Profound?
Both read AI referral traffic from GA4 too, and do it well. Proofsource puts referral visits next to the same brand's AI visibility, fixes and before-and-after results, so you can connect a fix you shipped to the visits and revenue that followed.
Can I get the numbers through an API?
Yes. The AI referral numbers are available through the Proofsource API, so agencies and analysts can pull them into their own dashboards.
