Find the gaps: questions, competitors and sources.
A low score says little on its own. The gap is specific: a question you lose, the competitor named instead, and the pages the engine read to decide. This chapter turns the answers into that list, and puts it in order.
Chapter 3 of 6 of the AI visibility guide
Which questions do you lose, and to whom?
Start from the answers, not the score. For every buyer question you track, note whether you were named, who was named instead, and which pages the engine cited. A low score is many different problems added together; this list separates them.
Then sort each lost question into one of two piles. In the first, someone else was named: there is a shortlist to get onto, and the cited pages show where it is assembled. In the second, nobody was named: the engine answered with criteria or prices, and the gap is a guide page that explains how to choose. In the public Tesla example, two of five ways of asking about grid storage named no supplier in any of 24 answers (the phrasing study).
Who gets named instead of you?
Count the competitors named in the answers you lose, per engine. Freeze that list before the first reading and keep it fixed: in our benchmark the leader's share of voice moved from 23% to 34% when two broad SEO suites were taken off the list, and not one answer changed (the benchmark). The IAB's August 2026 measurement framework asks providers to disclose how the competitive set is chosen for the same reason.
Then look at whose pages were cited. In 1,205 answers with citations, the eight competitors each brand tracks had their own websites cited 16.2% of the time; the brand's own site, 0.87%. A competitor's site appeared in 57% of those answers, the brand's in 6% (the citation count). In one category we opened, 508 of the 574 citations to vendor sites went to inner pages: product pages, comparison pages and support sites, not homepages.
For the method, see competitor mentions in AI answers and how to benchmark against competitors.
Of 11,831 citations in buyer answers on four engines, the share that pointed to the brand's own website.

AI citations studyWhich pages do AI engines cite for your category?
For “best tool for X” questions, engines lean on pages that compare options: listicles, alternatives pages, versus pages, review sites, videos and forums. In the Tesla example, youtube.com was cited 29 times, en.wikipedia.org 24 times and reddit.com 20 times, against 17 for tesla.com. Most of these pages are written by third parties, and many accept submissions or corrections.
The global most-cited lists are a poor guide to your own. Ahrefs' September 2026 list for ChatGPT puts Reddit first, but it pools every kind of question, from recipes to symptoms. Across 15 categories of buyer questions, 94% of the 4,190 domains cited appeared in one category only, and in 8 of the 15 categories none of the seven universal sites made the top ten (your category has its own cited sites). Build your list from your own questions:
- Ask each engine the buyer questions that matter most to your pipeline.
- List every page they cite, and mark which ones mention you, and whether they describe you correctly.
- Sort the ones that leave you out by how often they are cited. Those are your targets.
Citation share is the term for how much of that list points at you. Working the list is chapter 5.
Which gap should you fix first?
Match the symptom to the fix, in the order the gates in chapter 1 run:
- Engine misdescribes you
- Fix identity first: one plain sentence and one spelling everywhere (chapter 4).
- Your pages never cited
- Check crawler access and JavaScript-only text before writing anything new (chapter 4).
- A page names you wrongly
- Ask for the correction: it is a smaller request than a new entry (chapter 5).
- Cited pages leave you out
- Pitch the most-cited ones with facts their authors can check (chapter 5).
- Nobody was named
- Publish the guide a buyer needs to choose, with your criteria stated plainly (chapter 4).
- The engine never searched
- Only a future model can change it; measure the answers that did search (chapter 6).
