Earn the third-party pages AI engines cite.

Most of what an AI engine cites for a category question was written by someone else: roundups, review sites, forum threads and videos. This chapter covers each one, with what we measured and what the platforms say about themselves.

Why do third-party pages matter so much?

Because they are most of what engines read. The brand's own site drew 0.8% of the citations in our AI citations study, and the shortlist for a category question is mostly assembled from pages someone else wrote: roundups, review sites, forum threads and videos. You found the ones that matter for your questions in chapter 3. This chapter is how to work them, one kind of page at a time.

How do you get onto roundups and listicles?

Start with the ones that already name you. A roundup hands an engine a name, a one-line description, a price and a “best for” label, and that bundle is what gets repeated. A stale line puts the wrong price or the wrong audience inside your own shortlist slot, and a correction is a smaller ask than a new entry (fix the roundup line first). Zapier, for one, publishes how it selects apps, says it is never paid for placement, and its suggestion form says it will fix incorrect information even though it cannot promise to add anyone.

  1. Sort the cited roundups into three piles: names you correctly, names you wrongly, leaves you out.
  2. Send each wrong line with the page URL, the exact sentence, what is true now, and a link an editor can check in seconds.
  3. Before asking to be added, read the feature list the article itself publishes, and meet it.
  4. Pitch the authors with something useful: accurate facts, a fair comparison, a real customer.
  5. Publish your own honest comparison pages, with sources for every claim about other products. Engines discount pages that only flatter their author.

Our own comparison of AI visibility tools is written to that standard, weak spots included, and so are the tool-by-tool comparisons.

Do review sites and software directories help?

Less than the advice suggests, and not through your profile. Across 9,198 citations for six software brands, the ten directories we counted took 165, 1.8%, and only 19 of those pages belonged to the brand being measured. The pages cited were category rankings (29.7%) and alternatives pages for one named product (28.5%), more than single product profiles (the directory count).

G2's own page for AI assistants says a vendor can ask customers for honest reviews but cannot influence ratings, placement or sort order. So the lever is real reviews from real customers, which feed the ranking that gets cited. Never buy or write reviews: the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (published August 22, 2024) bans fake reviews, and one exposed review can undo the rest.

Should you be on Reddit?

Be in the right thread, not on Reddit at large. In 1,764 answers from Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, Reddit held about 3% of citations, and all 183 Reddit links pointed at one specific comment thread: 101 threads in 64 subreddits, two of them cited by both engines (the Reddit count).

  • Find the threads already cited for your questions; that is not a bet, posting widely is.
  • Answer as yourself, say where you work, and help with the question asked.
  • Skip planted questions and second accounts. Reddit's rules ask for authentic participation and ban deceptive impersonation, and its transparency report for July to December 2025 counts 154,198,211 posts and comments removed. A removed thread cannot be cited.

Does video help, and what kind?

On Google, yes. youtube.com was the most cited domain in our Google AI Overviews sample at 10.4% of 5,139 citations, against 0.7% of ChatGPT's; in the AI citations study it was the domain cited in the most buyer answers, 10.2%. What gets cited is a moment: 59% of the distinct YouTube links jumped to a timestamp, at a median of 75 seconds in (the YouTube count).

  • Answer one buyer question early in a short video, and say so in the description.
  • Add chapters: YouTube's help page asks for a first timestamp at 00:00, at least three in ascending order, each at least 10 seconds long.
  • Expect most cited videos to be other people's. Only 2.1% of the AI Overview citations were on the measured brand's own channel, so the people who review tools in your category are worth briefing too.
