What are Reddit citations in AI answers?

A Reddit citation is a link to a Reddit thread that an AI engine lists as a source for its answer. Reddit shows up near the top of most-cited lists, and the usual advice is to get talked about there. Look at the links themselves and every one is a single thread that matched a single question, which changes what a brand should do about it.

How often do AI engines cite Reddit?

Often enough to rank high, rarely enough to be a small share. In 1,764 answers we collected from Google AI Overviews and our ChatGPT engine, Reddit took 141 of 4,803 AI Overview citations (2.9%), tied for third, and 42 of 1,230 ChatGPT engine citations (3.4%) (the post).

Outside data agrees that Reddit sits in a small group of common sources. Pew found that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together accounted for 15% of the sources listed in the Google AI summaries it examined (Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025).

What do engines actually cite on Reddit?

One thread at a time. All 183 Reddit citations in our sample pointed at a specific comment thread: 101 threads across 64 subreddits, 67 of them cited only once in five weeks, and just two cited by both engines.

So engines do not read Reddit as a whole. They retrieve the thread that matches the question in front of them, often in professional subreddits where people who do the job compare tools.

What do Reddit citations look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), reddit.com was cited 20 times across buyer and brand questions, behind youtube.com (29) and en.wikipedia.org (24) and ahead of tesla.com (17).

Google AI Overviews accounted for most of it, citing reddit.com 15 times across 25 buyer questions. For a brand like Tesla, the threads an engine pulls in carry owners' experiences straight into the answer.

How should a brand work with Reddit citations?

Work the threads that are already cited, not Reddit in general:

  • Run your buyer questions on each engine and save every Reddit URL cited, one list per engine.
  • Read each thread: are you named, described correctly, and is the complaint in it still true?
  • Where you can add something useful, reply from an account that says who you are and answers the question asked.
  • If the top comment names a real problem, fix the product or the page first.
  • Rerun the questions a month later; most threads drop out and new ones arrive.

Where do you see Reddit citations in Proofsource?

Proofsource lists every cited page per engine for each question, Reddit threads included, so you can see which threads matter for your category and whether they mention you. See Citations.

Common questions about Reddit citations

Should I post about my brand on Reddit to get cited?

Posting widely is a bet that a post becomes one of the few threads engines retrieve. Promotional posts also tend to be removed. Working the threads already cited for your questions is not a bet.

Does every AI engine cite Reddit equally?

No. In our samples, Google AI Overviews leaned on Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn far more than ChatGPT did, and the two engines rarely cited the same thread.

Can I get a negative Reddit thread removed from AI answers?

Not directly. If the thread is wrong, a disclosed reply with the correct fact can sit beside it; if it is right, fix the problem. The engine decides whether to keep citing it.

Why does an old Reddit thread appear in AI answers?

Because it matched the engine's search for that question better than anything newer. Threads that keep matching keep being cited.
