What is an AI citation?

A citation is a web page an AI engine links to or lists as a source for its answer. Being named and being cited are different things. An engine can name your brand while citing a competitor's comparison page, or cite your page without naming you, and the two together tell you whose pages are shaping the answer.

What counts as a citation in an AI answer?

A citation is any page the engine links inline or lists as a source: a numbered marker in the text, a link card beside an AI Overview, or a source list under a Perplexity or Claude answer.

A citation list is not a full record of what the engine read. OpenAI documents that its web search returns a sources field with every URL the model consulted, and that the number of sources is often greater than the number of citations (OpenAI API docs, read Oct 15, 2026). A page can shape an answer without being cited (the post).

What do AI citations look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), the four engines gave 1,008 citations across 100 answers to 25 buyer questions, pointing at 455 different websites. 17 pointed at tesla.com, about 1.7%.

The engines cited very differently: Perplexity gave 375 citations, Claude 351, Google AI Overviews 189 and ChatGPT 93. ChatGPT gave tesla.com 12 of its 93; the other three gave it 5 of 915.

Is being cited the same as being named?

No: a mention is your name in the answer, a citation is a page listed as its source, and either can happen without the other.

In one benchmark, Google AI Overviews named the category leader in 18 answers and cited its site in 1; 17 of its 18 mentions came from answers built on other people's pages (the post). Named but not cited means others are describing you. Cited but not named means your page is helping recommend someone else.

How do AI engines choose what to cite?

They cite from what they retrieved, and each engine retrieves differently:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: indexed pages eligible to show with a snippet, chosen through several related searches.
  • ChatGPT: the searches it writes from your question, when it decides to search at all.
  • Perplexity and Claude: their own web search, usually with long source lists.
  • On every engine: pages that answer the specific sub-question plainly, near the top of the page.

Where do you see citations in Proofsource?

The Citations tab in Proofsource lists every cited page per engine, marks which ones mention you, and reports Source share (your share of all citations) and Source reach (the share of answers citing you at least once). See Citations and citation share.

Common questions about AI citation

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is your brand's name in the answer text. A citation is a page the engine links as a source. Track both, because they move separately and point to different work.

Why does AI cite my competitor's page about me?

Because that page answered the question the engine searched for, often a comparison or alternatives query. A fair comparison page of your own can compete for the same searches.

Are AI citations always accurate?

Not always. A citation shows which link the engine displayed, not exactly which sentence it used, and some engines attribute text to the wrong page or a republished copy. Open the cited page before acting on it.

How do I get cited more often?

Be readable by AI crawlers, answer the sub-questions buyers ask in plain text near the top of the page, and earn a place on the third-party pages engines already cite for your category.

Citation share

Citation share is the share of all the citations in AI answers that point at a given website.

Third-party sources

Third-party sources are pages about your category written by someone other than you, such as reviews, roundups, forum threads, videos and competitors' sites, that AI engines read and cite.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a method where a language model first retrieves relevant documents and then writes its answer with them in view.

AI visibility

AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name your brand when people ask about your category.

Worked example: Tesla, public AI answers, Oct 4, 2026: Proofsource's first scan of Tesla, 25 buyer questions and 5 brand questions, one answer per question on each of four engines. A small sample from one brand, shown as an example, not a benchmark.
