Cited page insights: why AI cites the pages it cites

Proofsource reads the pages AI engines cite and tells you what the winners have in common. Each citation is tagged by position and page type, each cited page, PDF and YouTube video gets a summary with verified quotes, and a citation decay curve shows how cited pages age. Then you can check how easily AI could quote your own pages. It is for content and SEO teams who want to be cited, not just mentioned.

Cited page insights, explained

Cited page insights explain why AI engines cite the pages they cite. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or other AI engines answer a buyer question, they link a handful of sources. Those pages are not random: the ones cited first tend to answer the question in their opening lines, keep each claim in a self-contained passage, use tables for comparisons and stay fresh. Knowing those patterns tells you what to change on your own pages.

A list of cited domains is a start, but it does not say what to do. You need to know which pages are cited first rather than last, what kind of page they are, how old they are, and what they actually say. A review site cited first for comparison questions calls for a different response than a forum thread cited late for pricing questions.

Proofsource captures and normalizes the citations in every answer, tags each by position and page type, and reads cited pages, PDFs and YouTube videos into a summary with verified quotes. A citation decay curve across brands shows how cited pages age. You can set your own citation categories, then check your own pages: how easily an engine could lift a self-contained, quotable passage, plus llms.txt, page health and content changes.

How it works

Learn what the pages AI cites first have in common: position, page type, age and what they say, then check your own pages against it.

  1. Capture citations

Citations in every answer are captured and normalized; old rows are repaired without new calls.

  2. Tag position and type

Each cited page is tagged cited first, early or later, and classified by page type.

  3. Read the cited page

Pages, PDFs and YouTube videos get a summary with quotes verified against the source.

  4. See how citations age

A citation decay curve shows how cited pages age across brands.

  5. Check your own page

Measure how easily AI could quote your page, and run llms.txt and page health checks.

A cross-brand curve of how cited pages age, shown in the GEO brief's Citation Decay section, plus a list of your pages whose AI citations are fading, refreshed regularly.

Extractability check and page rubric

Measures how easily an AI engine could lift a self-contained, directly quotable passage from your page, on any page when you need it. Fix pages are written to a rubric drawn from cited pages: answer first, one claim per passage, tables for comparisons.

Questions about cited page insights

What are cited page insights?

They explain why AI engines cite certain pages: where each page is cited in the answer, what type of page it is, how old it is and what it says.

What does cited first, early or later mean?

Each cited page is tagged by its rank in the answer's sources. Pages cited first tend to shape the answer most.

Does Proofsource read PDFs and YouTube videos that AI cites?

Yes. Cited pages, PDFs and YouTube videos each get a summary with quotes verified against the source.

What is citation decay?

It is how cited pages age. Proofsource builds a curve across brands and shows it in the GEO brief, so you can time content refreshes.

What is extractability?

It measures how easily an AI engine could lift a self-contained, directly quotable passage from your page, such as a one-line answer at the top.

Can I set my own citation categories?

Yes. You can add and remove citation categories for a brand and tune how answers are parsed.

Which engines are covered?

Citations are captured from every engine your plan covers, up to 10 from ChatGPT and Perplexity to Gemini, Copilot and Grok. The free trial runs the four core engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews.

How is this different from citation tracking in Profound or Otterly.AI?

Profound and Otterly.AI give strong views of which sites and URLs are cited. Proofsource adds what those pages say, with verified quotes, how they age, and checks that show how to make your own pages quotable.

Try it on your own brand.
