Track the sources AI cites when it answers your buyers

An AI citation source tracker records every link up to 10 AI engines, from ChatGPT and Perplexity to Gemini, Copilot and Grok cite when they answer your buyer questions. Proofsource counts those citations by domain and by page, sorts each source by type, and marks which ones you own, which you can influence and which are out of reach. Marketing, SEO and PR teams get a ranked list of the sources that shape AI answers in their category.

AI citation source tracking, explained

When an AI answer engine answers a question with web search turned on, it reads pages first and then lists some of them as sources. Perplexity numbers its sources, ChatGPT search shows source links beside the answer, Google AI Overviews show link cards, and Claude cites the pages it read when it searches. Those cited pages are the evidence the engine used to decide which brands to name. AI citation source tracking is the practice of recording those sources across many buyer questions and many runs, so you can see which websites actually shape the answers in your category.

The pattern is rarely what a brand expects. Review sites, forums, video, reference sites and best-of lists often outrank the brand's own site. A competitor can be recommended again and again because three comparison pages name it and none name you. Counting citations by domain tells you which publishers matter; counting them by page tells you the exact article to get onto, correct or outdo.

Proofsource asks your buyer questions on a schedule, across up to 10 engines depending on plan,, stores every answer with its sources, and runs one classifier over every cited link. Each source gets a type (your site, a competitor, a review site, a forum, news, social) and a control class (you own it, you can influence it, or it is out of reach). The result is a ranked, sourced list of where to act, with every number traceable to the answers behind it.

How it works

Every domain and page cited by up to 10 AI engines, from ChatGPT and Perplexity to Gemini, Copilot and Grok, for your buyer questions, sorted by type and by who controls it.

  1. Ask your buyer questions

Proofsource runs your tracked buyer questions on up to 10 AI engines, from ChatGPT and Perplexity to Gemini, Copilot and Grok, and stores each answer with the links it cited.

  2. Collect every cited link

Each answer's sources are saved as pages and rolled up to domains, so you see both the publisher and the exact article.

  3. Classify each source

One classifier gives every source a type, such as review site, forum, news or your own site, and a control class: owned, can influence, or out of reach.

  4. Rank where to act

Domains and pages are ranked by how often they are cited, per engine, with your own pages and competitor pages called out.

  5. Open the evidence

Click any domain or page to read the answers that cited it, with the engine and the date of each run.

Cited domains

Every domain AI answers cite for your buyer questions, ranked by how often it is cited and split by engine.

Cited pages

The exact URLs behind those domains, with how many answers cited each one, so you know which article to act on.

Source analysis

Cited sources are collected, grouped by domain, classified and ranked for your brand, giving one view of which sources shape your answers.

Citation categories

One classifier and a shared set of source types, such as review site, forum, news, your site and competitor, sit behind every category number, so the share of review sites or forums means the same thing on every chart.

Retag a source

Change the type of any cited domain, for example mark a partner blog as a review site, and your tag is used from then on.

Control class per source

Each cited source is marked as one you own, one you can influence, or one that is out of reach.

Citation supply

Rolls the control classes up into one view of how much of the cited supply in your category is open to you.

Own-page overlap check

Shows where several of your own pages are cited for the same questions and compete with each other, computed live from your citations.

Find the pages AI trusts more than yours

See which cited pages outrank your own site for buyer questions, and which of your own pages split the citations between them.

Head of customer marketing

Decide where reviews pay off

When review sites carry a large share of citations, the source list shows exactly which profiles to build up first.

Agency strategist

Show a client where answers come from

Open a client's cited sources with type and control class, and turn the list into an outreach and content plan.

Why it matters

Act on specific pages

A domain count says who matters. A page count says which article to get onto, correct or outdo.

Spend effort where you have control

The control class separates sources you can change from ones you cannot, so plans start with what is reachable.

One meaning per number

A single classifier behind every category chart means the numbers agree across screens and reports.

Every count has evidence

Each citation opens the answer that made it, with the engine and date, so no number is taken on faith.

Questions about AI citation source tracker

How does Proofsource know which sources AI cites?

Proofsource asks your buyer questions on up to 10 AI engines, from ChatGPT and Perplexity to Gemini, Copilot and Grok, and stores every answer with the links it lists as sources. It counts those links by page and by domain, so every number comes from real answers you can open.

Does it work with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews?

Yes, and on Gemini, Copilot, Grok and the rest of your plan's engines too. Each engine gets its own view because they read different sources. The free scan and trial run four of them.

What is the difference between a cited domain and a cited page?

A cited domain is the website, such as g2.com. A cited page is the exact URL, such as one G2 category page. Domains tell you which publishers matter; pages tell you which article to get listed on, correct or outdo.

What does the control class mean?

Each cited source is marked as one you own (your site), one you can influence (review profiles, forums, lists that take submissions, blogs) or one that is out of reach (competitor sites, most news). It helps you start with sources you can actually change.

Can I change how a source is categorized?

Yes. You can retag any domain, for example mark a partner blog as a review site. Your tag is used across the charts from then on.

What is the own-page overlap check?

It shows where several of your own pages are cited for the same buyer questions. When two of your pages split the citations, merging or clarifying them can give the engines one clear page to cite.

How is this different from Ahrefs or Semrush citation reports?

Ahrefs and Semrush both report cited domains and pages inside wide SEO toolkits, which is a real strength. Proofsource runs your own buyer questions across the engines on your plan, adds a type and a control class to every source, flags your own pages that compete, and links each count to the stored answer behind it.

Which sources does AI cite most?

It depends on the category and the engine. Review sites, forums, video, reference sites and best-of lists often outrank a brand's own site. That is why tracking your own category matters more than any general list.

Try it on your own brand.
