What is mention rate in AI answers?

Mention rate is the share of AI answers to a question that name your brand. Named in 6 of 20 answers is a 30% mention rate. It is the core number of AI visibility, and on its own it hides three things: how uncertain it is, where in the answer you appear, and what the answer says about you.

How is mention rate calculated?

Mention rate = answers that name your brand divided by answers sampled, for a fixed set of questions on one engine or across several. Count a brand once per answer, however many times the answer repeats it.

Two counting rules decide whether the number is honest. First, leave out answers that never came: a search where Google showed no AI Overview, or an answer where the engine asked which category you meant, is not a miss. Counting it as one pulls the rate down for reasons that have nothing to do with you; our tracker once missed the Overview on 96% of searches because it never loaded it. Second, keep questions that name you out of the set, because they name you almost every time.

What does mention rate look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), 53 of 100 answers to 25 buyer questions named Tesla: a mention rate of 53%, with a 95% range of about 43% to 62%.

Per engine the rates spread from 40% to 64%, each on only 25 answers, so every engine's range is wide. The brand questions show why they are kept apart: 19 of 20 answers to questions that named Tesla mentioned it, a rate that measures the question rather than the brand.

Why does a mention rate need an interval beside it?

Because AI answers vary from run to run, every mention rate is an estimate from a sample, and the sample size decides how far the true rate could sit from it.

A single answer that names you is consistent with a true rate anywhere from 20.7% to 100%, and a single miss with anything from 0% to 79.3% (the arithmetic). Even no mentions in 20 answers leaves room for a true rate up to about 16%. A Wilson interval puts that range on the page so a small sample is not read as a fact.

What does a mention rate leave out?

A mention rate scores the first brand an answer names and the fifth the same, and most buying answers name several. In our sample of 6,546 answers that named any company, the median named five.

In one software category we tracked, two companies were each named in 70 of 160 answers, a 44% mention rate apiece. One was named first 38 times, the other 15 (the post). Read mention rate with the measures that qualify it:

Where do you see mention rate in Proofsource?

Proofsource reports mention rate per engine and overall, each with a 95% Wilson interval, and every figure opens onto the answers behind it, the brands named instead and the pages cited. The AI Visibility feature page shows the screen and the methodology how answers are counted.

Common questions about Mention rate

What is a good AI mention rate?

There is no universal benchmark, because it depends on how many brands your category's answers name. Compare yourself with the brand named most often on the same questions and engines, and read the interval: a rate from 20 answers can sit a long way from the true figure.

Is mention rate the same as share of voice?

No. Mention rate is the share of answers that name you. Share of voice is your share of all the brand mentions in those answers. A new competitor appearing everywhere can leave your mention rate flat and cut your share of voice.

Should questions that name my brand count toward mention rate?

No. A question that names you will mention you in almost every answer: 19 of 20 in the Tesla example. Track those questions separately and read them for accuracy.

How often should mention rate be measured?

Often enough that the interval is narrower than the change you care about. Daily runs averaged over a week give seven readings instead of one; a weekly run on a large, fixed question set is usually enough for a trend.
