What is position in an AI answer?

Position in an AI answer is where your brand sits among the brands the answer names: first, third or last on its shortlist. AI answers to buying questions usually name several brands, and a buyer reads them from the top. Position records where you land in that list. Two brands with the same mention rate can be first and fifth, and only position shows it.

How is position measured in an AI answer?

Position is measured as your place among the brands an answer names, counted in the order they appear: first, second and so on. Across many answers it is reported as an average place when named, or as the share of answers where you were named first.

Prose makes it harder than a numbered list. An answer can open with a brand to dismiss it, or name the pick in its last sentence, so position should be read beside the answer text, and any tool should say how it counts a paragraph.

Why does position matter if you are already named?

Because most buying answers name several brands. In our sample of 6,546 answers that named any company, the median named five (the post).

In one software category, two companies were each named in 70 of 160 answers, a 44% mention rate apiece. One was named first in 38 of its 70 answers (54%, 95% range 43% to 65%), the other in 15 (21%, 13% to 32%). In 6 of 18 categories we checked, the most-named company was not the one most often named first.

What does position look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), asked which EV has the best fast-charging network for road trips, ChatGPT opened its answer with "Tesla is the best choice for cross-country EV road trips in the U.S." That is first place, stated as a verdict.

Other answers named Tesla further down or not at all. Asked for the best home battery for whole-house backup, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude named the Powerwall 3 and Google AI Overviews did not name Tesla. Position is read per question and per engine, because each engine builds its list differently.

Is first place the same as a recommendation?

No. Being first usually signals the pick, but an answer can open with the best-known brand in order to argue for someone else, or list brands in no particular order.

That is why position is read with tone: a recommendation is a mention the answer endorses. Track position to see who the buyer meets first, and read the sentences around your name to see whether first place is praise or a setup for a competitor.

Where do you see position in Proofsource?

The Visibility page in Proofsource shows each tracked company's average position when named next to its mention rate, per engine, and the daily changes call out when an engine starts or stops naming you first. It does not measure where a name falls on screen or whether anyone clicked. See the AI Visibility feature page.

Common questions about Position in AI answers

What does average position mean?

Your average place among the brands an answer names, counted only in answers that name you. An average of 1.5 means you are usually first or second when you appear; it says nothing about how often you appear.

Is position in an AI answer like a Google ranking?

Only loosely. A Google ranking is a slot on a results page. Position in an AI answer is your place in a written shortlist that changes between runs, so it has to be averaged over many answers.

How do I move up in AI answers?

Read the answers where a competitor is named first and see what the engine says the difference is, then check that difference appears, as a number, on the pages it cites: comparisons, roundups, reviews and your own pages.

Does position count when the answer is a paragraph?

Yes, by order of first mention, but treat it with care. A paragraph can name a brand early to set it aside, so read the text before acting on a position change.
