What is an AI recommendation?
In an AI answer, a recommendation is a mention that endorses your brand, usually by putting it on the answer's shortlist or naming it as the pick for the buyer's situation. Every recommendation is a mention, but not every mention is a recommendation. A brand named last, or named as the option to avoid, is mentioned without being recommended, and telling the two apart means reading the answer, not just counting names.
How is a recommendation different from a mention?
A mention is your name anywhere in the answer; a recommendation is the answer endorsing you, by putting you on its shortlist or naming you as the pick for the buyer's situation.
Mention rate counts both. Position and framing separate them: a brand named first with a reason attached reads very differently from one listed fifth or dismissed in a clause. Position in AI answers and AI sentiment are how you read the difference at scale.
Why does an AI engine recommend one brand over another?
Recognition wins ties, and evidence breaks them. Chu and Hou gave three models sets of products with identical ratings, prices and reviews, one real brand among fictional ones, and the known brand was recommended 100% of the time; a competitor with less than a 0.1-star rating advantage made that dominance disappear (arXiv, June 16, 2026, read Oct 15, 2026).
So the practical work is getting the fact you win on into the pages engines read. If the roundups an engine cites list you without a rating, a price or the one specification you beat the leader on, the model has nothing to choose you for (the post).
What does a recommendation look like in a real example?
In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), asked for the best home battery for whole-house backup power, ChatGPT answered: "my top pick in 2026 is the Tesla Powerwall 3 for most homes." That is a recommendation: a pick, named first, for the buyer's situation.
Asked which EV has the best fast-charging network for road trips, ChatGPT opened: "Tesla is the best choice for cross-country EV road trips in the U.S." On the same backup battery question, Google AI Overviews did not name Tesla at all. A recommendation on one engine says nothing about the next.
Where do recommendations get lost?
Between being found and being picked. An audit of about 37,000 production runs over 215 commercially framed prompts in 19 sectors found category leaders won only 25% to 41% of the recommendation slots they reached, while 48% to 52% of specialist and regional brands never surfaced at all (arXiv, May 22, 2026).
Those are different failures with different fixes. A brand that is never retrieved needs to be on the pages engines read. A brand that is retrieved and passed over needs those pages to say why it is the better pick.
Where do you see recommendations in Proofsource?
Proofsource shows, for every buyer question, who was named, in what order, how each answer framed your brand, and the competitor named in the same answer, with the full text one click away. See AI recommendation tracking and Accuracy and sentiment.
Common questions about AI recommendation
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in the written answer itself. The recommendation comes from what the model already knows and the pages it reads while answering, so the work is on those pages: yours, and the roundups, reviews and comparisons that describe you.
How do I know if an answer recommends me or just mentions me?
Read where you appear and the sentence around your name. First place with a reason attached is a recommendation; a passing mention, a last place or a caveat is not.
Why does ChatGPT recommend a competitor with worse reviews?
Often because the pages it read did not show the difference. If your rating, price or key specification is missing from the roundups and comparisons it cites, the model falls back on the name it knows.
Do recommendations differ by engine?
Yes, often. On the same question one engine can recommend you and another leave you out entirely, so track each engine separately.
