What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is a search tool that replies to a question with one written answer, usually with sources, instead of a ranked list of links. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude with web search, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all answer instead of listing. For a brand, the change is that there is no page two: you are in the written answer or you are not.
How does an answer engine work?
An answer engine reads the question, often runs one or more searches, passes what it found to a language model, and returns one written answer with links to some of its sources.
The searches are the engine's own. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, running several related searches (Google Search Central, read Oct 15, 2026). Microsoft says Copilot generates its own short query and sends it to the Bing search service to ground its answer (Microsoft Learn, updated August 18, 2026).
How is an answer engine different from a search engine?
The two differ in what they return and what a brand has to win:
| Search engine | Answer engine | |
|---|---|---|
| Returns | A ranked list of links | One written answer, with some sources |
| A brand wins | A position on the page | A place in the answer's shortlist |
| Same query twice | Mostly the same results | Often a different answer |
| Measured by | Rank per keyword | Share of answers that name you, sampled |
What does this look like in a real example?
In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), four answer engines got the same 25 buyer questions and disagreed. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews named Tesla in 16 answers each, Claude in 11, Perplexity in 10.
They also read very differently. ChatGPT gave 93 citations across those answers and Perplexity 375, so the same site can hold a large share of one engine's sources and almost none of another's.
Do answer engines agree with each other?
Less than their averages suggest. Across 576 question days in our sample, when any one of four engines named a brand, all four named it only 32.4% of the time; three engines with near-identical rates were naming the brand on different questions (the post).
And answers cost clicks. Pew found that when a Google search showed an AI summary, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% (Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025).
Which answer engines does Proofsource track?
Every self-serve plan asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews the same questions in the same words; Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and others are switched on with the team on Managed or Custom plans. See how each engine chooses brands and engines and models.
Common questions about Answer engine
Is Google an answer engine now?
Partly. Google Search still returns links, and for some searches it adds an AI Overview above them. AI Mode is Google's answer-first experience.
What is answer engine optimization?
The work of getting your brand named and your pages cited in answer engines' answers. It is also called generative engine optimization (GEO).
Do answer engines send traffic?
Some, through the links in their answers, but far fewer clicks than a page of results. Being named in the answer is the visibility; the click is a bonus.
Which answer engine matters most?
The ones your buyers use. Engines often name different brands for the same question, so measure each one rather than assuming one stands for all.
