What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search that ends without the person clicking through to any website, often because an answer was shown on the results page itself. When the answer sits on the results page, many searches end there. AI summaries make that more common, which moves the value from the click to the sentence: whether your brand is named in the answer the buyer reads and leaves with.

How much do AI summaries reduce clicks?

Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% (Pew Research Center, July 22, 2025).

Searches with a summary also ended the browsing session more often: on 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% with only regular results. About 18% of the searches in the study produced a summary.

What does Google say about clicks from AI Overviews?

Google says that when people click from search results pages with AI Overviews, these clicks are higher quality, and that traffic from its AI features is included in the Web search type in Search Console rather than reported separately (Google Search Central, read Oct 15, 2026).

The two views fit together: fewer clicks per search, from people further along. Neither changes the fact that most readers of the summary never visit a source.

What does zero-click look like in a real example?

In the public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026), Google AI Overviews named Tesla in 16 of 25 answers to buyer questions and cited tesla.com once. A reader saw Tesla named in most of those answers with almost no link to Tesla's own site to click.

That is the zero-click trade in one line: the brand still wins the mention, and the visit, if any, goes to a video, a thread or a review that the overview cited instead.

What should a brand do about zero-click search?

Measure the answer, not just the click:

  • Track whether AI answers name you for your buyer questions; that is the visibility a zero-click search leaves.
  • Read what the answer says about you, since the buyer may never see your page.
  • Earn a place on the pages the answer cites, which may get the few clicks that remain.
  • Read AI referral visits beside mentions, and judge them by conversion, not volume.

How does Proofsource measure what zero-click hides?

Proofsource measures the answers themselves: which buyer questions name you on each engine, how, and which pages are cited. Search Console clicks and AI-referred sessions sit beside them in AI Traffic. See AI Visibility and AI Traffic (the post).

Common questions about Zero-click search

Is zero-click search new?

No. Answer boxes and knowledge panels ended many searches before AI summaries. AI summaries extend it to longer, comparison-style questions, which are the ones buyers ask.

Does zero-click mean SEO no longer matters?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible, so search basics still decide whether you can be a source. What changes is what you measure.

How do I track visibility without clicks?

Ask the engines your buyer questions repeatedly and count the answers that name you, with an interval. Clicks measure what is left after the answer.

Did Google confirm Pew's numbers?

Google has its own view: it says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality. Pew's study measured the real browsing of 900 US adults; treat its direction as solid and its exact sizes as one measurement.
