What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is Google's conversational AI search experience, where a question gets a written answer with links and can be followed with more questions. AI Mode is a separate tab of Google Search built around a written answer and follow-up questions. It is not AI Overviews with more room: Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so they can show different answers and links for the same question.
How does AI Mode build its answers?
AI Mode builds an answer by fanning a question out into many searches and writing from the results. Announcing its US rollout on May 20, 2025, Google said AI Mode breaks a question into subtopics and issues a multitude of queries simultaneously, and that Deep Search in AI Mode can issue hundreds of searches (Google).
Google's guidance for site owners describes AI Mode as particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons (Google Search Central, read Oct 15, 2026). That is the shape of most buying questions.
How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?
AI Overviews appear above normal results for some searches; AI Mode is its own conversational experience. Google states that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary.
So a brand can be named in an Overview and missing from AI Mode for the same question, or the reverse. They have to be measured as two engines. See Google AI Overviews for the other one.
How can a page appear in AI Mode?
The same way as in AI Overviews: Google says there are no extra requirements.
- Be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet; nosnippet or a tight max-snippet removes a page.
- No special files, AI text files or schema.org markup are needed, by Google's own statement.
- Answer the sub-questions a buying question fans out into: price, fit, alternatives, setup.
- Expect no separate report: Search Console counts AI Mode traffic inside Web search.
What does this mean in a real example?
The public Tesla example (Oct 4, 2026) measured Google AI Overviews, not AI Mode. AI Overviews named Tesla in 16 of 25 buyer answers and cited youtube.com 20 times, reddit.com 15 times and tesla.com once.
Because Google says AI Mode may use different models and techniques, none of those figures transfers to AI Mode. A dozen searches per question also means the pages that answer the sub-questions, not the head term, decide the shortlist (the post).
Does Proofsource track Google AI Mode?
Yes, on Managed or a Custom plan: the team switches AI Mode on for your brands after a call and tracks it separately from AI Overviews. See the Google AI Mode visibility tracker guide and query fan-out.
Common questions about Google AI Mode
Is AI Mode available everywhere?
Google announced AI Mode for everyone in the US on May 20, 2025. Check Google's own help pages for your country and language.
Can I opt my site out of AI Mode?
Only with the same snippet controls as Search: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex, which also limit how the page appears in normal results. Google-Extended does not control it.
Does AI Mode use the same sources as AI Overviews?
Not necessarily. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their links vary. Track them separately.
How many searches does AI Mode run?
Google describes a multitude of queries per question, and hundreds for Deep Search. The exact sub-searches behind an answer are not published.
