Free llms.txt generator and validator, side by side
Proofsource offers a free llms.txt generator and validator for site owners and developers. The generator writes an llms.txt in the llmstxt.org format as you type, and can start from your sitemap. The validator fetches your live /llms.txt and checks the title, summary, sections and every link against the proposal. Both are free, need no sign-up, and store nothing.

Llms.txt, explained
llms.txt is a markdown file at the root of a website, served at /llms.txt, that tells language models what the site is and which pages matter. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024. The format is simple: one H1 with the site name, a short blockquote summary, optional notes, then sections headed with ## that list links to key pages.
Some AI agents and developer tools read llms.txt. No major answer engine has said it ranks or cites pages by it, so treat it as a cheap, clear brief for models rather than a ranking lever. Readable pages and open crawler access matter far more for being quoted.
Proofsource gives you both halves for free. The generator builds the file as you type and checks it line by line, and it can turn your sitemap into a draft Pages section. The validator fetches the file your site actually serves and tells you, rule by rule, whether it follows the proposal.
How it works
Write an llms.txt in the llmstxt.org format from your sitemap, then validate the live file line by line, free with no sign-up.
Describe your site
Type your site's name, a one-paragraph summary and any notes a model should read first.
Start from your sitemap
Optionally pull your sitemap.xml: up to 200 page URLs become a draft Pages section to trim and rename.
Copy the file
The llms.txt builds as you type. Copy it and put it at the root of your site as plain text.
Validate the live file
Run the validator on your domain to check the copy your site really serves.

Questions about llms.txt generator and validator
What is llms.txt?
A markdown file at the root of a site that tells language models what the site is and which pages matter. It was proposed at llmstxt.org in 2024.
Will llms.txt make ChatGPT or Perplexity name my brand?
There is no evidence it does. No major answer engine has said it ranks or cites pages by it. It is a cheap, clear brief for agents and developer tools; readable pages and open crawler access matter far more.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your site, so it answers at /llms.txt, served as plain text. Then run the validator on your domain to check the live copy.
What does the validator check?
That the file starts with one H1 title, has a summary, uses ## sections with markdown lists of links, keeps the text before the first section free of headings, and uses absolute https:// links. It also catches a site that returns an HTML page instead of the file.
Can it build the file from my sitemap?
Yes. Pull your sitemap.xml and up to 200 of its page URLs become a draft Pages section that you trim and rename.
Is anything I type stored?
No. The generator runs in your browser, and the validator's checks are plain rules with no AI model involved.
What is the Optional section?
Links under a section named Optional are the ones a model short on context may skip. The generator always writes it last.
How is this different from the Semrush or Peec llms.txt checks?
Those checks sit inside broader site audits and are useful there. The Proofsource tools are free with no sign-up, and include a generator as well as a validator.
